News and Thoughts

A Sci-Fi Writer Joins the 21st Century

Welcome to my new website! I’ve been meaning to set up a decent author page for some time now and be a little more diligent about keeping up with news, thoughts, and general observations about things that my readers may find interesting. If that’s what you’re looking for from me, then sit down and make yourself comfortable—you’re in the right place!

Going forward, I’m going to post new blogs on this site’s front page. If you’re interested in my past posts, you might want to visit my blogspot.com site Baker’s Field (formerly known as Atomic Dragon Battleship). Most of those touch on my general interest in the gaming hobby and nerd culture, with some occasional thoughts on current events and politics.

My big news this month is the upcoming release of Valiant Dust, the first book in an original military SF series. Circle November 7 on your calendars—that’s the big day! Valiant Dust is available for preorder now from your favorite online retailers and many independent brick-and-mortar bookstores (you can find some purchase links here). Even if it’s not your thing, I’d sure appreciate it if you help me to spread the word about the book!

Valiant Dust represents a big new step for me. I’ve written a number of novels over the years, but they’ve all been part of shared-world universes like the Forgotten Realms. Valiant Dust is book 1 of Breaker of Empires, a brand-new, original sci-fi series starring an intrepid officer named Sikander North. While I often enjoyed quite of lot of latitude to invent new characters, plots, and villains in the Forgotten Realms, the Sikander North universe is all “mine”; it’s the story I chose to tell when I decided it was time for me to tell any story I wanted to. Mix up a little Doc Smith, C.S. Forester, and Tom Clancy with my own small experience at sea and love for the Navy of steam and iron, and you’ll get a sense for what I hope to do with the Sikander North stories.

In upcoming weeks, I’ll explore a little bit of the world-building and technological assumptions behind the Breaker of Empires series. I’ll dive into some of the historical influences that drive the strategic plotting of the storyline, and I’ll keep you posted on the progress of new books. And I’ll offer some occasional commentary on things that just catch my eye in sci-fi, hobby games, or the world in general. I hope to see you here again soon!
